Today we checked out of our cottage, did the Kileaua Iki hike, then started working our way back to the Kona Airport.
Still in Volcano Nat'l Park is a hike down to the bottom of the Kileaua Iki (little) crater. It is 4 miles round trip, a lot longer with Rex who likes to run off into caves and other diversions.
We found plently of the oxilate crystals that may some day make up a green sand beach of their own.

After we left Volcano, we had to go to Ken's for breakfast again. T

We did the quick loop of Banyan Drive then headed north to do the Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden on the 4-mile scenic drive that follows Hwy 19 on the Hamakua coast.

Yup, that hibiscus is blue.

After the battery died, we finished our tour of the gardens, w
ent back to What's Shakin' to grab some sandwiches for later, then drove up to the Waipio Valley Overlook. Unfortunately we didn't have time to hike down.
We had hoped to stop in Waimea to see some of the Parker Ranch and Cattle, but it was raining so we pushed through and took in the last bit of long, straight, visi
ble road that we'll be seeing for a while. Oahu doesn't have anything quite have an open road like this anywhere. Yeah, it's strange the things you miss.
The end of the trip was a bit of a whirlwind. We were supposed to fly a little after 8pm, leaving us to get home after 10. Rex has field training exercises this week so
we decided it was worth it to try to get on back. We returned our car at 3:45, found a nice lady with Hawaiian Airlines willing to waive the rebooking fee as a military discount who booked us on the next flight that was boarding... at that moment! By the time the old man in front of us figured out how to take his belt off to get through the metal detector they were calling our name over the speaker threatening to leave without us. We ran out onto the tarmac to catch our flight. Turns out it was leaving 7 minutes early anyway so the threats of leaving us behind were likely rather empty. We were entering Mililani by 5:30! It is really hard to get pictures of the colorful trees we have here, but here is my feeble attempt during our drive home.
Purple...
More purple....

A block away from home... (we're convinced the buil
